Game Relection: Where The Water Tastes Like Wine

I know I’ll like this game the moment I start playing it. I love visual fictions, but that’s not why. This game helps me fulfill my dream: walk around, talk to people, exchange our stories, and probably at last drink some wine together and cry. Though the artworks are so poor that they make the game become funny, it doesn’t change the fact that the whole story is a masterpiece.

Due to a great loss in gambling, the protagonist owed his debt to a mysterious guy. The guy asked him to travel around the country and collect and exchange stories with different people and hopefully, find the place where the water tastes like wine. The mechanics is pretty simple: find main characters, tell the stories that they want to hear and collect their stories. Each story is short, but nicely written. It shows the history background of Great Depression-era in United States.

I like the theme very much. I always believe that each person has their own stories and those stories are much more interesting than movies and books. However, though exchanging stories sounds fun in real life, it’s hard to make a good game based on this theme. Part of the reason is that, it’s hard to tell a lot of stories directly and have many dialogues without making the game boring. I don’t think this game is suitable for everyone, at least not suitable for those who don’t like to read a lot of texts in a game. But for those who love to read, the stories are so well-written and cover a lot of different categories, so, on the contrary, texts are not weakness anymore.

I will probably never be able to travel around and collect stories myself, but thanks to this game, my dream comes true.
